Web Design – What You Should Not Do?

Posted by Bryan Bell

Every website designer wants his/her designs to be gorgeous and successful at generating revenue for the website owner. At times some of the web designers are over enthusiastic for perfectionism and overdo some things that have adverse effect on the performance of the website. Some things which the web designer should not do are as follows.

•    Colors:
If there are no colors then it is a problem and if there are too many colors then it is a bigger problem. Many a times, some of the designers do not think the impact of the many colors that they use. Usually, when lot of colors are used, the colors clash instead of supporting each other and instead of feeling comfortable the visitor at times feels irritated and may skip to another website.  The upper limit of the number of colors used should be 5.

•    Lengthy Paragraphs:
A lengthy paragraph with more than thousand words is enough to turn off the reader. No visitor would like to read that lengthy paragraph. Instead, it would be better if the thousand word content is broken into short paragraphs with a maximum of 350 words each. People like to read short and sweet not long and boring paragraphs.

•    Keyword Stuffing:
Google is too intelligent to be taken for a ride by stuffing the content with around 40-45 keywords. If the crawlers find out that the keyword density is higher than the permissible limits, the website is not only going to lose the ranking on the search engine list but may also be banned. So please do not resort to keyword stuffing.

•    Time for finding something:
Nowadays everyone is busy and many get irritated when they do not find the things that they are searching for. When the visitor is at your website he/she should be able to find what he/she is searching for within 30 to 40 seconds and within 3 clicks if possible. He should not feel that he/she is searching for a needle in a hay stack. The moment he/she feels this he/she is going to skip and visit other website. Make sure that there is a search box on the webpage.

•    Placing Advertisements:
Everything is good in limits. Placing some ads on the web page may generate some revenue, but excess of ads can back fire. When the ads are in excess the visitors hardly have any content to read and so they will neither visit your website again nor will they click on the ads that you have placed. So it is better that the ads are 30 percent and the content is 70 percent.

•    Fonts and Sizes:
If the elements of the website are of different fonts and sizes, the visitor can get a negative feeling about the website. Some uniformity needs to be maintained. A bit of variation is needed for contrast but not a lot of variation.

Do not add useless content to the website. Use images where needed. Do not use excess of images. The website should not look as if it is made in the 1980s by a kid. It should have a professional look as if designed with the latest technology.
