‘Grum Botnet’ destruction dismantles cyber crime – “A major cut down in spam emails around the world”

What are Botnets?

When huge networks of PCs are infected with malware they are called as zombies or botnets which has a controller from where the botnets are controlled. These botnets are then instructed to perform malicious activity such as steal identities, deny service attacks, send spam, and so on. The bigger the botnet, the more cybercrime it results into.

Where do they come from?

Botnets are created and run by amateur hackers, cyber criminals or crime syndicates, who support criminal activity. Botnets are controlled by command-and-control (cnc) servers, where botnet owners through a private channel on chat servers sends commands and also updates the malware code. Herders who are the so called operators of botnets then rent it to clients such as spammers, who pay for the huge volumes of spam generated by the network. Since spam originating from a botnet originates from millions of host servers rather than a single server, it gets difficult to block such spams.

How can they be stopped?

To attack botnets, command and control servers are targeted rather than targeting millions of infected devices. By this zombies remain infected but they become inactive due to in-operational command and control servers. Botnets install another command and control server in order to compensate loss of one which makes it very difficult to remove these servers. Also botnets use peer to peer technologies to share updates of network reconfiguration among zombies so that they are updated accordingly. Thus it becomes very important to attack all command and control servers simultaneously so as to prevent from new servers being made available to the zombies.

Grum Botnet

Impact

Grum, also known as Tedroo, was a botnet involved in sending pharmaceutical spam e-mails. Grum, which got dismantled recently in July 2012, was responsible for creating 18% of the world’s spam and generating 18 billion spam emails every day. Grum infected 1,20,000 computers turning them into zombies a day on an average.

Loophole

For its operation it relied on two types of servers. First one was involved in sending configuration updates to the zombies, and the second one directed botnets as to which spam emails to send. But it suffered from a fatal flaw i.e. command servers IP addresses were coded into the software, and the network was distributed into independently operated segments. It meant that command and control servers could be taken down simultaneously as the network had no recovery mechanism. Due to which before new command and control servers could be brought to replace, existing ones were taken down in one stroke making it ineffective and inoperative. Malware research organization Fire Eye coordinated these activities with other security groups as well as several internet service providers in countries where these command and control servers were located in order to take down Grum.

Inception of the End

Grum had several command and control servers scattered around the globe in countries like Russia, Panama, Netherlands and Ukraine. Two of Grum’s primary command servers in Netherlands were first taken down by a Dutch internet service provider. Then server at Panama was the next to be taken down leaving one main server in Russia. When botnet operators came to know about this they shifted their traffic to Ukraine by setting up six new servers there. But then these servers, along with one in Russia, were taken down. The primary server located in Russia was taken down by an upstream provider, instead of an internet service provider, who null-routed the IP address at Fire Eye’s request.

Android 4.1 Version or Jelly Bean OS is now officially available on smart-phones and tablets. It has been introduced just after few weeks of Google’s I/O Developer’s Conference. Jelly Bean is filled with rainbow colors but also maintains the white logo of Google composed of yellow, blue, green and red. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean looks similar to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when seen first. On the positive side, it allows users to swipe left, right, up or down to unlock. On the negative side, Android Beam is not the same as in the case of Ice Cream Sandwich, due to the slow take-off speed.

Advantages

• Jelly Bean is much faster and smoother to compete with Apple as far as performance and features are concerned.

This was all too much technical right? Let’s make it simpler, it means that website designed by keeping in mind any particular browser may not work well in other browsers.

If you wish to tackle this browser compatibility issue in web design, appropriate tools, adhere to web standards and involving conditional statements, are basically three different ways through which you can easily get rid from this.

• Get help from tools! Always prefer to start website design for most flexible and easy browser, for example say
Firefox. Main reason to choose Firefox for designing website is numerous tools it offers to website designers to diagnose the problem and fix codes. Web developer’s toolbar & Firebug are best tools.

Web developer’s toolbar empowers web designers to modify CSS in order to verify fixes speedily, outline particular element, turn off the cache to enable testing and lot more.
